Theresa Hitchens

Senior Reporter on Space, Breaking Defense

Theresa Hitchens is the Senior Reporter, Space at Breaking Defense. As a long-time journalist, researcher and analyst, she has written widely on issues related to outer space governance and military activities, foreign and security policy, arms control, NATO, and international organizations for the past two decades. Hitchens began her career as an intern to Sen. John Glenn in his Washington office, followed by an internship at NATO’s Parliamentary Assembly in Brussels, Belgium. As a young reporter, Hitchens spent five years at Inside Washington Publishers covering the Environmental Protection Agency, the Air Force and electronic warfare. Hitchens joined Defense News in 1988 as Brussels Bureau Chief covering NATO and the EU, and  ended her 11-year stint there serving as editor from 1998 to 2000.  

From 2000 to 2009, Hitchens was vice president and director of research at the Center for Defense Information (CDI), where she launched the Space Security Project to provide information and analysis on military space budgets and the implications of space policies, spending and activities on international and national security writ large.  

Prior to joining Breaking Defense in April 2019, Hitchens spent three years as a senior research associate at the University of Maryland’s Center for International and Security Studies at Maryland (CISSM) – after serving a six-year term as director of the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) in Geneva, Switzerland. Hitchens is a graduate of the Ohio University E.W. Scripps School of Journalism in Athens, Ohio, where she was named an L.J. Horton Distinguished Alumna in 2009.
